Did you know that up to 80% of falls, especially those 65 and over occur in the bathroom?
If you think about it, all the ingredients are there to increase the likelihood. Often hard slippery surfaces that are often wet. Couple this with smaller spaces to move and other hard surfaces that can also result in head strikes, elbow strikes etc, the need for diligence is high.
Most falls occur in transfer out of showers or baths or while using the toilet. Slick tile floors and often rugs create tripping hazards coupled with stability issues, use of walkers and similar aids to manoeuvre
What can be done reduce the chances of often debilitating falls?
- Installing grab bars beside the toilet, shower or bathtub
- Install non slip mats or decals in front of toilets ot tubs and not fluffy raised rugs
- Place shelves at eye height rather than having to reach up
- Regularly clean spills and soap scum build ups
- Use a shower chair if required making sure it is non slip with rubber tips
- Raise the toilet seat height if need to reduce effort
- Use a motion sensor toilet light for visits to the bathroom at night.
